This week’s column “A journey through the beautiful beaches of Syracuse” features the most famous and well-known Syracuse beach area in the world: Fontane Bianche.

Fontane Bianche, so called because of the numerous natural freshwater springs that gush from the seabed, is characterised by a 3 km long coastline of cliffs but also of fine white sand and crystal clear blue sea. Perfect for families, due to the temperature and depth of the water, the beach of Fontane Bianche is both free and equipped with many bathing establishments. Some facilities also offer small Jacuzzis, volleyball courts, golf courses, bars and restaurants inside. In general the whole area of Fontane Bianche, with the passing of the years, has been enlarged improving its offer and becoming today one of the main meeting places for young people and families who love to spend their summer holidays in this area.  Here, in fact, you can find clubs, pubs, restaurants, pizzerias, evening attractions and large parking areas. From this year onwards, the famous Farmer’s Mark with its zero-kilometre products. Many guests decide to visit this beach during their stay and are extremely fascinated by the wonderful sea, reminiscent of the Caribbean. This area is also rich in legends and mysteries. In particular, we tell you the story of ‘La Casa dei Tre Tocchi’, an old farmhouse dating back to 1700, which once belonged to the Giaracà family, Barons of Fontane Bianche.

Legend has it that one evening some thieves entered the house to look for an alleged treasure, killed the barons and beheaded their little daughter, throwing her into a well. The three touches therefore correspond to the three souls who were the victims of that episode. Even today, as a sign of respect or for fear that the souls might cast a curse on them, motorists still honk their horns three times. Fontane Bianche is a stone’s throw from Noto, 15 kilometres from Syracuse and can be reached by train, bus or car. All you have to do is go south from Syracuse along Via Elorina/SS115, after almost 5 kilometres turn left and take Traversa Passaggio a Livello Santa Teresa Longarini; then turn right and take Str. Ognina/SP104, going straight on for 7 kilometres.
